Luka Doncic: Basketball Savior
With Dallas being so close to our apartments here in Garland, TX, the Mavericks are definitely our favorite NBA team here at The Mansions at Spring Creek. As such, we have absolutely loved watching young Luka Doncic take over the NBA this season. How has he been able to do it? We’ll dive into that and look back at a few of our favorite Luka highlights from early in the season.
Luka Doncic has been a Slovenian angel for the Dallas Mavericks this year. At just 19 years old, he’s already one of the best players in the league. His quick ascension has made him a viral sensation. So much so, that Isaac Lee and Jason Gallagher of the media outlet The Ringer wrote and recorded a cover the Leonard Cohen’s famous song “Hallelujah” titled “Halleluka.” The song was such a big success that the Mavericks had Lee and Gallagher perform the song live at halftime of a game.
His immediate success has come as a bit of a surprise for everyone except Doncic himself. Prior to coming to the NBA, Luka had been playing professionally in Spain since he was 14 years old. He even won the Euroleague MVP award when he was 18, the youngest player to ever win the award. However, players that have succeeded in Europe have not always seen that success translate to the NBA.
Despite the accolades he had already achieved in his young career, many teams believed he lacked the athleticism of other NBA players, and to an extent, they were correct. Luka doesn’t have the speed or vertical of many of his peers, but what he does have is an elite understanding of the geometry of basketball. Luka is able to use his big body and basketball IQ to create passing lanes, angles, and shots that are simply unavailable for other players. Combine that with his patented stepback three-point shot, and you have the makings of a player who can succeed no matter what the situation is.
Luka Doncic has been a viral and immediate success this season. His presence has single-handedly put Dallas in the midst of the playoff race. What’s your favorite Luka moment from this season? Thanks for reading our blog!
